Hotelware is especially toughened crockery with vitrified (harder) glazes that have been designed to withstand continuous and hard use. It is heavier and thicker than home use crockery. As the factories do production runs of items a percentage of that production will have a flaw or imperfection.(Perhaps the glaze has not gone on very evenly, a speck of dust could have got onto the glaze and shows up as a black spot.) These flaws are often imperceptible in normal use - I guarantee you will have used 2nds without even knowing about it - and thus the factory releases these at a discount rate which we can pass onto you. However, the down side is that once the factory has produced sufficient amounts to replenish their 'best' stocks, production can move to a different item, and once this happens 2nds of this particular item (e.g. tea pots)may become scarce until production of that item resumes. Having said that popular items such as stacking cups, mugs and plates are nearly always available. Patterned 2nds (Dudson) are very rare and some Churchill ranges (i.e. All coloured ranges plus, Buckingham, Chateau, Alchemy etc)are not released as 2nds at all.
