Banks Pottery has just completed a second batch of custom-printed mugs for artist Pete McKee.
‘After the Storm’ was a new design based on a painting Pete did for his ‘6 Weeks to Eternity’ exhibition held at Magna, just up the road from us in Rotherham.
We used the same Fine Bone China Mug as before as they worked so well previously. You can take a look at the first mugs we custom-printed for Pete here.
Being an artist, Pete is very particular about the colours he uses in his paintings and these need to be replicated on any merchandise that is produced. With printing on ceramics this can pose problems.
Printed ceramic decals can only use natural pigments to obtain colour and some colours are difficult to re-produce. ‘After the Storm’ has a large area of pink as the sky, and pink is notorious for being difficult to get right!!
So, once again, we worked with RC Design (Ceramics) of Stoke on Trent to run some colour swatch tests to make sure all the colours would fire as expected and produce the best colour match we could possibly get. The pink turned out just right but was an expensive colour to produce so, with a little careful editing of the colours being used, we came to a satisfactory print price that everyone was happy with, without compromising the design too much.
The prints were delivered to the decorators, along with Pete’s own design backstamp for the mug bottom, and the mugs were made up and fired. We delivered the mugs directly to the exhibition just in time, along with 200 brown boxes that had a ‘window’ cut out so the design could be displayed.
These custom-pritned mugs sold out during the weekend of the exhibition! Good job all round…
